During the initial phases on a major SHTF situation, it’s quite possible that life will still go on in a reasonably civilized fashion (depending upon the severity of course).

But after a couple of weeks or so the situation will start to head South, and when it does the old societal norms will start to disintegrate very rapidly. Food and supplies will run out, and the unprepared citizens (i.e. nearly all of them) are going to be out desperately trying to get their hands on whatever supplies they can – including yours.
